Jessie Haver Butler’s story on YouTube.

Mila Johansen shares Jessie’s story of the day women won the vote, 100 years ago, on August 18, 1920.

“August 18, 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, and women’s right to vote in the United States. My grandmother, Jessie Haver Butler, kept detailed accounts of her life, including her work as the lobbyist for the League of Women Voters in 1920. Jessie was the first woman lobbyist at the nation’s Capitol. From Cowgirl to Congress, is the edited version of her extensive memoir. The book shares her journey from a traumatic childhood on a cattle ranch in Colorado to Smith College; to her work with the suffrage movement, and later life as an author and teacher of public speaking for women. Jessie was progressive and very hip for the times. She was involved in speaking out for the rights of women - and encouraging women to speak up for themselves until her death at age 98 in 1985.” ~ Mila Johansen, Author

Mila Johansen, Jessie’s granddaughter, is available to share the book at your club, women’s group, library or school (in person or virtually). Her presentation includes an optional PowerPoint, including rare photographs.

“I have peppered the book with letters and rare pictures to go along with excerpts from Jessie’s autobiography, to set the scene for events in the women’s movement and beyond. There are many entertaining stories, never before heard, about Jessie’s personal encounters with Alice Paul, Emmeline Pankhurst, Queen Mary, Sir J. M. Barrie, Eleanor Roosevelt, George Bernard Shaw, Gloria Steinem and significant others.” ~ Mila Johansen
