After graduating from college, Jessie found a job working in New York at Macmillan Publishing where she spoke out against the poor pay for women, and was fired. She soon found another job putting together the Pulitzer School of Journalism at Columbia University with Professor John Cuniliff. When the next director arrived, expecting her to work until all hours of the night, Jessie again found her voice and spoke out, afraid she would loose that job also.
